Health & Safety

Safety first

We work every day in potentially dangerous conditions, where accidents are always possible. That's why workplace safety is such an overwhelming priority - so important, in fact, that every Board and Group Management Board meeting starts with a discussion on health and safety.  Likewise the corporate Health & Safety department now reports directly to the ArcelorMittal Chairman and CEO.

We've set ourselves the very challenging ambition of becoming the safest steel and mining company in the world, but we know we have a great deal to do to get there. In 2007, we spent US$216 million on safety measures, and we're implementing worldwide programmes to bring all our operations up to the excellent standards some are already achieving.

We also know that changing people's behaviour can't be achieved overnight, but some of the pioneering work being done on this by our site in Hamilton, Canada, is now being used as a role model for the rest of the Group.

The Journey to Zero is a long one, but it's one we're committed to, and we can already point to some significant successes. Read more about ArcelorMittal performance and practices
